Artful SciComm is science communication inspired, informed, and enhanced by art.
Artful SciComm exists because my passion is collaborating with scientists and nonprofits to enhance public science literacy and communication with peers.
Through the Artful SciComm Initiative, I coach PIs, grad students, labs, and science educators as they develop and enhance skills in drawing, artful writing and presenting, and incorporating art into research, teaching, and public outreach efforts.
Ultimately, my motives are to use compelling images and art-science integration to:
- increase multidisciplinary collaboration;
- improve scientific literacy;
- enhance science learning experiences.

I am an award-winning artist/communicator fascinated with science and sustainability. I focus on illustrations that don’t obscure how ecosystems work and editorial projects that connect readers’ everyday lives to the natural world,
I am particularly passionate about teaching researchers, teachers, and the public how to incorporate drawing into work and lifestyle.
Along with teaching sketching workshops and classes, my passion is creating images that communicate about the natural world, food, and sustainability.
My award-winning work can be seen in numerous publications, including American Scientist, Camas, Montana Outdoors, and Western Confluence. Through my own studio business – CommNatural – I also embrace visual communication projects such as doing photography for Parks Canada or leading sketching workshops for scientists at Harvard Forest and the 2014 and 2015 Ecological Society of America annual meetings.
